Why Hervey Bay is Famous for Whale Watching

Hervey Bay is internationally recognised as the whale watching capital of Australia, and for good reason.

Unlike other destinations where whales are simply passing through, the whales in Hervey Bay:

  • Stop to rest for days or even weeks
  • Socialise in calm, sheltered waters
  • Show relaxed and curious behaviours around boats

Protected by K’gari (Fraser Island), the waters of Platypus Bay offer ideal conditions for extended whale encounters.

This is what makes whale watching in Hervey Bay so special it’s not rushed, and it’s not unpredictable. It’s one of the most consistent whale experiences in the world.

Why Small group

Whale Swim Experiences Matter

At Salty Safaris, we deliberately operate small group whale swim tours to improve both safety and encounter quality.

Smaller groups mean:

  • Less noise and disruption in the water
  • More space for each guest
  • Better positioning for whale encounters
  • A calmer environment whales are more likely to approach

Large vessels can overcrowd encounters and reduce the quality of interaction. We prioritise quality over volume.

    what to expect on

    Your Whale Watching Tour

Every day on the water is different, but you can expect an unforgettable encounter with humpback whales in their natural environment.

During your whale watching Hervey Bay experience, you may see:

    • Breaching (whales launching out of the water)
    • Tail slapping and pectoral fin displays
    • Spy hopping (whales lifting their heads above water to observe you)
    • Social interactions between pods and calves
    • Close, natural approaches to the vessel

Some encounters are calm and gentle, others are energetic and playful — no two days are ever the same.
